In this poem the poet,Stephen Spender, has presented a true picture of the life of the school children living in a slum . The children are in a very miserable condition due to their poverty and illiteracy. They are depressed. Their pale faces shows their sadness. They look weak and lean. Due to not getting proper nourishment their bonnes peeped out their skins.They are like rootless weeds which can't resist anything for their existence. They are physically very weak and under nourished. Spender is much worried for these children who live all their life in slum and have no opportunity to enjoy the real blessings of life. He makes a frantic appeal to the authorities,the educated and affluent sections of the society to make the life of slum children better through education. It will remove social injustice and class inequality.

इस कविता में कवि स्टीफन स्पेंडर ने एक झुग्गी में रहने वाले स्कूली बच्चों के जीवन की सच्ची तस्वीर पेश की है।  बच्चे अपनी गरीबी और अशिक्षा के कारण बहुत दयनीय स्थिति में हैं।  वे उदास हैं।  उनका पीला चेहरा उनके दुख को दर्शाता है।  वे कमजोर और दुबले दिखते हैं।  उचित पोषण नहीं मिलने के कारण उनके हड्डियाँ उनकी खाल से बाहर निकली हुई है।। वे जड़ विहीन जंगली घास की तरह हैं जो अपने अस्तित्व के लिए कुछ भी विरोध नहीं कर सकते।  वे शारीरिक रूप से बहुत कमजोर और पोषित हैं।  स्पेंडर इन बच्चों के लिए बहुत चिंतित हैं जो अपना सारा जीवन झुग्गी में रहते हैं और उन्हें जीवन के वास्तविक आशीर्वाद का आनंद लेने का कोई अवसर नहीं है।  वह झुग्गी के बच्चों के जीवन को शिक्षा के माध्यम से बेहतर बनाने के लिए अधिकारियों, समाज के शिक्षित और संपन्न वर्गों से एक उन्मत्त अपील करता है।  यह सामाजिक अन्याय और वर्ग असमानता को दूर करेगा।
